January 9, 2025Unveiling the 2017 Document: What Lies Beneath FBI’s Russiagate Secrecy?
In May 2017, a deeply controversial FBI decision launched a counterintelligence probe into President Trump over claims of Russian collusion. Despite Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report clearing Trump of conspiracy, the FBI continues to shroud its investigation in secrecy. The implications of these secretive actions raise important questions about accountability and transparency in Washington.
FBI Secrecy and the Document Release
The FBI still hides critical details about its investigation into President Trump, known infamously as “Russiagate.” A newly released but heavily redacted document came to light due to a Freedom of Information request. It shows how the FBI began probing Trump in May 2017 as a potential Russian agent.
The investigation aimed to determine if Trump was indeed an agent for the Russian government. This probe, initiated by then-acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe, followed Trump’s firing of former FBI director James Comey. Senior officials like Bill Priestap and Jim Baker approved the probe, intertwining it with a larger investigation known as Crossfire Hurricane, focused on Russian interference in the 2016 election.
The Steele Dossier and Political Motivations
The Steele dossier, funded by Hillary Clinton’s campaign, played a significant role in this debacle, fueling the FBI’s unfounded concerns about Trump. Despite discrediting the dossier, the FBI re-engaged with its author, Christopher Steele. This decision raises alarms about the FBI’s motivations and who truly benefited from these actions.
“[T]he idea is, if the president committed obstruction of justice, fired the director of the FBI to negatively impact or to shut down our investigation of Russia’s malign activity and possibly in support of his campaign, as a counterintelligence investigator you have to ask yourself, ‘Why would a president of the United States do that?’ So all those same sorts of facts cause us to wonder is there an inappropriate relationship, a connection between this president and our most fearsome enemy, the government of Russia.” – McCabe
John Brennan, former CIA Director, informed President Obama about the Clinton campaign’s intentions to tie Trump to Russia. McCabe, on numerous occasions, suggested that the investigation was more about retribution for Trump’s firing of Comey than about factual evidence tying Trump to Russia.
What the Public Deserves to Know
The American public, many of whom are steadfast patriots, remain largely unaware of the FBI’s full actions and motivations when targeting Trump as a Russian agent. This investigation, part of Robert Mueller’s larger probe, wrapped up in April 2019 without public disclosure of the counterintelligence operation.
Accountability is paramount, especially when the nation’s highest office was under such scrutiny. Yet, the Justice Department, along with subsequent investigations, has failed to adequately address why such an investigation commenced in the first place, leaving pressing questions about motive unanswered.
