Two Virginia State Police troopers were killed in a helicopter crash near Charlottesville, Va., that officials say is linked to violent clashes in the city, President Trump confirmed in a tweet Saturday.
“Deepest condolences to the families & fellow officers of the VA State Police who died today. You’re all among the best this nation produces,” Trump tweeted shortly before 7 p.m.
The chopper was hovering low over houses before it went down roughly two hours earlier in a wooded area near the Birdwood Golf Course, the Daily Progress newspaper reports.
Virginia State Police confirmed the fatalities in a Facebook post, but didn’t indicate the victims were troopers.
The golf course is some seven miles west of Charlottesville’s downtown area.
“The cause of the crash remains under investigation at this time,” Virginia State Police said in the post.
A woman was killed earlier in the day when a silver Dodge Charger plowed into a crowd of people protesting a white nationalist demonstration in Charlottesville.
